UK launches Project Nightfall to develop new ballistic missiles for Ukraine

The United Kingdom has initiated a rapid development program to produce new ground-launched ballistic missiles for Ukraine, designed to strike targets over 500km away as part of enhanced support into 2026.
The United Kingdom has announced a new initiative to fast-track the development of tactical ballistic missiles specifically for Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in its military support. The program, named Project Nightfall, aims to deliver a potent, long-range strike capability to Ukrainian forces by 2026.
Rapid Development for Long-Range Strike
The UK Ministry of Defence launched a competition for industry teams to design and produce the new missiles under an accelerated timeline. The goal is to develop a weapon system capable of delivering a 200-kilogram warhead to targets more than 500 kilometers away. Defence Secretary John Healey, referencing a recent visit near Lviv, accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of escalating the war, stating, "We are determined to put leading edge weapons into the hands of Ukrainians as they fight back."
Mobile, Cost-Effective, and Export-Friendly
A key feature of the Project Nightfall missile is its operational flexibility. Designed to be launched from various vehicle platforms, the system emphasizes a "shoot-and-scoot" capability, allowing Ukrainian crews to fire multiple rockets and relocate within minutes to avoid counter-battery fire. The ministry highlighted the program's focus on providing a "powerful, cost-effective long-range strike option," with a unit cost cap of approximately £800,000 and designed to face minimal international export control hurdles.
Bolstering Industry and Sustaining Support
The project also serves a dual purpose of stimulating the UK's defense industrial base. Three industry teams are expected to each receive a £9 million development contract to design and deliver their first three test missiles within 12 months. Luke Pollard, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, linked European security directly to Ukrainian strength, asserting these new British missiles "will keep Ukraine in the fight." This commitment signals the UK's intent to sustain and technologically advance its military aid as the conflict continues.
