UK sees record single-day English Channel migrant crossings in December

More than 800 migrants arrived in the UK via small boats on Saturday, the highest daily figure for December, pushing the 2025 total past 41,000 and exceeding last year's entire count.
A record number of migrants crossed the English Channel to reach the UK in a single day this December, with 803 people making the journey on Saturday. According to the latest Home Office data, the arrivals in 13 small boats mark the highest daily total recorded for the month, bringing December's figure to around 2,100.
2025 Total Already Surpasses Previous Full-Year Count
The influx has pushed the total number of migrant arrivals for 2025 to 41,455, a figure that has already exceeded the full-year total of 36,816 recorded for all of 2024. A Home Office spokesperson described the number of small boat crossings as "shameful," adding that "the British people deserve better."
Government Points to Returns and New Enforcement Powers
The record arrivals come as the UK government emphasizes efforts to curb irregular migration. Authorities cite nearly 50,000 returns of individuals who entered illegally, under an agreement with France. A new UK-France treaty has also expanded powers to detain and swiftly remove those arriving by small boat, preventing access to the UK asylum system.
