Ukraine peace talks resume in UAE as delegations convene

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his delegation is en route to the United Arab Emirates for a second round of trilateral negotiations involving the US and Russia. The talks, set for mid-week, aim to build on earlier consultations and address outstanding issues on security guarantees and post-war recovery, with Kyiv urging decisive American support for the dialogue.
A Ukrainian delegation is traveling to the United Arab Emirates to participate in renewed peace talks with American and Russian counterparts, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced. This second round of trilateral negotiations, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, follows initial discussions held in Abu Dhabi late January, as the protracted conflict approaches its fifth year.
Agenda and Bilateral Coordination
In a video address, Zelenskyy stated the meetings would include both the three-party format and separate bilateral discussions with the United States. "There are issues to be agreed upon; there is substance that requires further work," he said, noting preparedness on security assurances for Ukraine. He emphasized ongoing collaboration with Washington on post-conflict reconstruction plans.
Call for US Engagement
The Ukrainian leader underscored the importance of sustained American diplomacy to keep the process on track. "It is important that... the United States also decisively supports dialogue – all available opportunities for dialogue – and works with the Russian side accordingly, so that Russian strikes and Russian terror do not derail what can be achieved," Zelenskyy remarked. He expressed hope that the US would help ensure the necessary conditions for progress.
Building on Fragile Foundations
The new talks build upon a first round described by all sides as "constructive," though Moscow acknowledged "significant work ahead." Recent short-term de-escalation measures, such as a temporary energy ceasefire reportedly brokered by US President Donald Trump, have been cited by Zelenskyy as factors helping to "build public trust in the negotiation process and its possible outcome." Prior to the delegation's departure, Zelenskyy met with its members to approve frameworks and set specific objectives for the UAE meetings.
