UN rights chief warns of repeat atrocities in Sudan's Kordofan region

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed extreme concern that atrocities committed in Sudan's El-Fasher could be repeated in the Kordofan states. He stated no Sudanese civilian has been untouched by the "cruel and senseless violence" as fighting intensifies between the army and the paramilitary RSF.
The United Nations' top human rights official has issued a dire warning that the horrific atrocities witnessed in the Sudanese city of El-Fasher may soon be repeated in the volatile Kordofan region. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk voiced his alarm on Wednesday in Geneva, highlighting the expanding geography of suffering in Sudan's civil war.
Direct Warning on Kordofan and Nationwide Suffering
"I am extremely worried that we might see in Kordofan a repeat of the atrocities that have been committed in El-Fasher," Türk told reporters. He emphasized the universal impact of the conflict, stating, "From Darfur and the Kordofans to Khartoum and Omdurman and beyond, no Sudanese civilian has been left untouched by the cruel and senseless violence." His warning comes as weeks of fierce combat between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have forced tens of thousands to flee the three Kordofan states.
Background of the Conflict and Territorial Control
The RSF, which is accused of massacres, torture, and summary executions during its capture of El-Fasher in late October, now controls all five states of the Darfur region except for parts of North Darfur. The national army holds most other territories, including the capital Khartoum, in a brutal stalemate. The war, which began in April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions, creating one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
Implications for Regional Stability and International Response
The prospect of El-Fasher-scale violence spreading to Kordofan underscores the conflict's escalating brutality and the failure of international mediation efforts. For neighboring countries and the international community, including nations like Türkiye that are engaged in humanitarian efforts, this warning signals an urgent need for renewed diplomatic pressure and enhanced civilian protection measures to prevent further mass atrocities.
