UN satellite data shows 81% of Gaza structures damaged or destroyed

A United Nations satellite assessment has revealed that 81% of all structures in the Gaza Strip have sustained damage during two years of conflict. The analysis documents extensive destruction across the territory, with northern Gaza experiencing the most significant recent damage increase.
A comprehensive United Nations satellite analysis has determined that 81% of all structures throughout the Gaza Strip have sustained damage during two years of ongoing conflict. According to UN spokesperson Farhan Haq, the assessment conducted by the UN Satellite Center reveals the staggering scale of destruction affecting residential, commercial, and public buildings across the Palestinian territory.
Regional Damage Distribution
The northern Gaza region has experienced the most substantial damage increase in recent months, with nearly 5,700 additional structures affected since July 2025. The detailed analysis categorizes the destruction, identifying more than 123,000 structures as completely destroyed, an additional 50,000 as severely or moderately damaged, and approximately 24,000 as possibly damaged throughout the Gaza Strip.
Humanitarian Response and Education Initiatives
Despite the widespread devastation, humanitarian efforts continue with the UN reporting that aid scale-up is "already having a positive impact on people in all areas of the strip." Educational restoration initiatives include renovation work at four schools and the recent establishment of five temporary learning spaces in Gaza City over a three-day period, though officials acknowledge that "much more is needed" to address the full scale of humanitarian requirements.

Conflict Context and Ceasefire Violations
The structural damage assessment emerges against the backdrop of a conflict that has resulted in over 68,000 fatalities in Gaza since October 2023. Although a ceasefire agreement based on a US-proposed 20-point peace plan took effect on October 10, the truce has been repeatedly violated, complicating humanitarian operations and reconstruction efforts in the devastated territory.
