The UN Security Council has called for an end to escalating violence in Yemen, reaffirming strong support for a political settlement and condemning the Houthi detention of UN, NGO, and diplomatic personnel.

The United Nations Security Council has issued a unified call for de-escalation in Yemen, warning that continued violence undermines the path to peace. In a formal statement, the 15-member council reaffirmed its commitment to Yemen's sovereignty and its support for UN-led diplomatic efforts to end the long-running conflict.

Strong support for political settlement

Council members emphasized their "continued strong support for efforts toward a political settlement and ultimately ending the suffering of the Yemeni people." They urged all parties and regional stakeholders to enhance diplomatic initiatives, noting that the current escalation is "not conducive to progress." The council also reiterated its backing for Yemen's internationally recognized Presidential Leadership Council and government.

Condemnation of detentions and aid threats

A significant portion of the statement condemned the ongoing detentions by the Houthi group of personnel from the UN, international NGOs, civil society, and diplomatic missions. Expressing deep concern for individuals held since 2021, including recent detentions in December 2025, the council stated that all threats to humanitarian workers are unacceptable and worsen the country's severe humanitarian crisis.

Commitment to unity and aid

The Security Council members reaffirmed their strong commitment to Yemen's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. They underscored that targeting aid delivery exacerbates one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters, where millions rely on international assistance for survival.
