UN urges adherence to Gaza deal amid hurdles, despite US phase two start
The United Nations has responded to the US declaration of a second phase in the Gaza ceasefire plan by emphasizing the ongoing severe humanitarian crisis and urging full compliance with the existing agreement. While acknowledging some aid delivery, UN officials detailed significant obstacles that continue to impede relief efforts.
A call for compliance and a political path
When asked about US Envoy Steve Witkoff's announcement, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated, "we continue to urge all parties to abide by the commitments they made under the agreement." He stressed the need for a credible political process leading to a two-state solution. Despite a "humongous amount" of aid being delivered, Dujarric said it was "not enough" due to persistent impediments.
Rising violence and continued restrictions
Contradicting the notion of a stable truce, Dujarric cited UN humanitarian office (OCHA) data showing a rise in incidents involving airstrikes, shelling, and armed clashes. "Last week saw the highest number of incidents resulting in casualties since the ceasefire went into effect," he reported. Furthermore, Israel has refused to reopen Gaza's crossings, violating a UN Security Council resolution calling for unimpeded aid and reconstruction.
Persistent casualties and the context of war
Palestinian authorities accuse Israel of repeatedly violating the ceasefire that halted a war which began in October 2023. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, nearly 450 Palestinians have been killed and over 1,200 injured since the truce began on October 10, 2025. For nations like Türkiye, a major aid provider and advocate for Palestinian rights, the UN's stark assessment highlights the gap between diplomatic announcements and the grim reality on the ground, underscoring the urgent need for enforceable commitments and accountability.
