Unidentified drones spotted over US base housing Rubio, Hegseth: Report
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth

Several unidentified aerial vehicles were observed flying over a military installation in Washington, DC that serves as the residence for US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to The Washington Post. The incident prompted a White House meeting and heightened security protocols, though the drones' origin remains undetermined.

Security scare at Fort McNair

The drones were detected over Fort McNair on a single night within the past 10 days, two sources familiar with the matter told the newspaper. The sightings triggered discussions among officials about potentially relocating both Cabinet members as a precautionary measure, but a senior administration official confirmed that neither Rubio nor Hegseth has been moved from the base.

Heightened alert level

According to the report, the US military has been operating at an elevated alert status since the joint American-Israeli offensive against Iran commenced on Feb. 28. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell declined to comment on the incident, telling the Post that discussing Hegseth's movements would be "grossly irresponsible." The State Department did not respond to requests for comment from the news outlet.

Regional tensions reverberate

The drone incursion at the heart of US military command comes amid escalating regional conflict that has seen Iran launch retaliatory strikes across the Middle East. Türkiye continues to monitor the widening war with concern, emphasizing the need for de-escalation and warning that such conflicts risk drawing in additional actors and threatening global security.
