UNIFIL demands Israel halt fire after shells hit peacekeeper base
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has formally called on the Israeli army to cease fire after its positions were struck in southern Lebanon. The incident, which involved two illuminating flare mortar rounds, marks a serious breach of the delicate truce in the region.
Details of the attack and immediate response
In a statement issued on Tuesday, UNIFIL reported that the projectiles hit the helipad and main gate of one of its bases located southwest of the town of Yaroun. Peacekeepers at the site immediately took shelter, and fortunately no injuries were reported. The mission directly contacted the Israeli military with a "stop fire request" following the attack.
A violation of international agreements
UNIFIL strongly condemned the action, stating that any activities endangering its personnel and positions "are serious violations of Security Council resolution 1701." The resolution, which ended the 2006 war, mandates UNIFIL's role in maintaining peace along the Blue Line border between Lebanon and Israel. The force stressed that such incidents "undermine the stability we are working to achieve" in a region Türkiye views as critical to Middle Eastern security.
Context of a fragile and incomplete ceasefire
This violation occurs against the backdrop of a nominal ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that has been in place since November 2024. That halt in hostilities followed over a year of intense cross-border exchanges that resulted in thousands of casualties. However, the ceasefire agreement, which called for a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon by January 2025, remains only partially implemented, with Israeli forces still maintaining a presence at several border outposts, contributing to ongoing tensions.
