Two US Navy F/A-18 fighter jets conducted a closely monitored, extended flight over the Gulf of Venezuela near the country's airspace, escalating military tensions. The US said it was a routine, lawful operation.

Two US Navy F/A-18 fighter jets conducted an extended flight near Venezuelan airspace on Tuesday, a move tracked by thousands online and seen as a significant escalation of military pressure on President Nicolas Maduro's government. Public flight tracking data showed the jets maneuvering over the Gulf of Venezuela for more than 30 minutes around noon local time.

US defense official cites routine, lawful operations

A US defense official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the mission to Anadolu, stating the Department of Defense "conducts routine, lawful operations in international airspace, including over the Gulf of Venezuela." The official added that the US would continue to fly "safely, professionally, and in accordance with international law to protect the homeland, monitor illicit activity, and support stability across the Americas."

Context of heightened US-Venezuela tensions

The flight occurred amid a sharp increase in US military activity targeting Venezuela. Last Saturday, US President Donald Trump declared the airspace "above and surrounding" Venezuela closed "in its entirety." Since September, the US has conducted at least 22 strikes on suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, resulting in at least 87 fatalities. Trump recently warned of soon targeting Venezuelan drug networks "by land."

Divergent narratives: drug war vs. resource grab

The Trump administration frames its actions as part of a regional counter-narcotics campaign. However, the Maduro government accuses Washington of using the drug war as a pretext to "appropriate Venezuela’s vast oil reserves through the lethal use of military force," alleging the ultimate goal is an unlawful regime change operation. The fighter jet flyover, publicly traceable and prolonged, is perceived as a demonstration of force amplifying these tensions.
