Technical-level negotiations between the United States and Iran are expected to resume in Switzerland “in a day or two,” according to Pakistani government sources. Pakistan’s interior minister has travelled to Tehran to discuss the next phase, following the postponement of talks over Israeli ceasefire violations in Lebanon.

Technical-level talks between the United States and Iran are expected to commence in Switzerland within the next two days, Pakistani government sources told Anadolu on Saturday. A source close to the mediation process said: “Pakistan together with other mediators is in touch with both sides that are expected to meet in Switzerland in a day or two to begin the next phase of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.”

Diplomatic coordination

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi departed for Tehran on Saturday to hold consultations with Iranian leadership regarding the next phase of negotiations, according to Iranian state media and Pakistani sources. The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed electronically by President Donald Trump and President Masoud Pezeshkian, had originally set the stage for direct talks in Switzerland this past Friday, but Tehran postponed the meeting to protest continued Israeli ceasefire violations in Lebanon.

Mediation efforts

Pakistan has been actively mediating between the two sides since securing a ceasefire on April 8, and hosted the highest-level direct talks between Washington and Tehran since 1979 on April 12-13. The upcoming technical discussions are expected to focus on implementing the 60-day negotiation framework outlined in the Islamabad Memorandum, which covers Iran’s nuclear programme and international sanctions.
