At least five people were killed when US and Israeli forces struck a residential building in the Iranian city of Qom early Monday, said a local official. Qom Deputy Governor Morteza Heydari said a missile struck the building in the city center. He said search and rescue operations were still underway.

Civilian damage in Qom

The governor of Qom province, Akbar Behnamjou, previously said that nearly 1,000 civilian buildings had been damaged in the city since the start of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, with 106 people killed, including 30 security personnel. Qom, a major religious center and home to the Fatima Masumeh Shrine, has been repeatedly targeted throughout the conflict.

Escalating strikes

The strike comes as President Donald Trump has threatened further attacks on Iranian infrastructure, posting on Truth Social that US forces "hasn't even started destroying what's left in Iran. Bridges next, then Electric Power Plants!" Trump has set Tuesday evening as a deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning of severe consequences.

Conflict context

The US and Israel have struck Iran since Feb. 28, killing more than 1,340 people according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, while restricting movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
