US Judge Restricts Federal Agents' Response to Immigration Protests

A federal judge in Illinois has imposed significant restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents operating in Chicago, prohibiting mask-wearing and limiting use of riot control measures against protesters and journalists. The temporary restraining order follows allegations that federal agents violated constitutional rights during immigration enforcement operations and related demonstrations.

US District Judge Sara Ellis issued the order after determining that federal agents' actions "clearly violated the Constitution" during recent Chicago operations. The ruling specifically protects First Amendment rights to protest and free speech, banning the use of riot control weapons against journalists, religious practitioners, and demonstrators unless there's probable cause of criminal activity.

The judicial order mandates that ICE agents must wear visible identification badges and cannot conceal their faces with masks during operations. Additionally, all official vehicles must display front and rear license plates in compliance with Illinois state regulations, addressing concerns about accountability and proper identification of law enforcement personnel.

The Department of Homeland Security defended its agents' conduct, citing increased attacks on federal personnel and their authority to protect government property. However, the temporary restraining order remains in effect for two weeks in Illinois' Northern District, also prohibiting arrests of non-violent protesters not resisting lawful dispersal orders and establishing specific protections for journalists observing operations.
