U.S. moves into Damascus for Israel: Syrians on edge

While U.S. officials claim the base will be used to monitor any potential peace agreement between Israel and Syria, many Syrians remain skeptical. Having already witnessed Russia use its military footholds to exert control over the Assad regime, they now fear Washington may attempt to pressure the new Syrian leadership in a similar way.
The United States is reportedly preparing to build a massive air base in Syria. The facility, to be established near Damascus, is said to be part of Washington’s plan to create a protective shield for Israel. Reports suggest that the base will serve as a command hub for U.S. operations in Lebanon and Gaza. Sources also indicate that it will be used to support PKK/SDF terrorists. Having already endured years of Russian military dominance under the Assad regime, Syrians now fear that the U.S. base could be used to advance Israel’s plan to divide their country.
A Vast Military Project
Alarming reports emerged just ahead of tomorrow’s scheduled meeting between Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump. According to claims cited by the UK-based Reuters news agency, which referenced both Western and Syrian sources, the U.S. and Syria are collaborating on constructing a large military air base near Damascus, close to the contact line with Israel.
Runway Tested by U.S. Aircraft
The Pentagon is said to have accelerated its construction plans over the past two months, and the airstrip at the new base has reportedly been completed and deemed operational. A U.S. C-130 transport aircraft is even said to have conducted a test landing to verify the runway’s readiness. Once fully operational, this would mark the first permanent U.S. military presence in Syria’s capital.
Pressure on Damascus
While U.S. officials claim the base will be used to monitor any potential peace agreement between Israel and Syria, many Syrians remain skeptical. Having already witnessed Russia use its military footholds to exert control over the Assad regime, they now fear Washington may attempt to pressure the new Syrian leadership in a similar way.
Support for PKK terrorists and Israeli Ambitions
There are growing concerns that the base could serve Israel’s strategy to arm the Druze and fragment Syria. Observers also warn that the terrorist PKK/SDF—refusing to integrate into the Syrian army—could receive logistical and military backing from the new installation. Reports further suggest that Israel may use the base to support its operations in Lebanon and Gaza, including ongoing strikes that have drawn international condemnation.
