Van Gogh painting returns to Dutch museum six years after theft

Vincent van Gogh’s “Spring Garden,” stolen from a Dutch museum in 2020, has been fully restored and will go back on public display starting Tuesday. The artwork was recovered three years after the theft with the help of a renowned art detective. The thief received an eight-year prison sentence.
A Van Gogh masterpiece stolen six years ago has been returned to its original condition and will be exhibited again at the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands. Dutch broadcaster NOS reported that “Spring Garden” (Lentetuin) was taken from the Singer Laren museum near Amsterdam on March 30, 2020—coinciding with the artist’s birthday. The painting remained missing until 2023, when art detective Arthur Brand facilitated its recovery after an anonymous individual returned it to the Groninger Museum, which had originally loaned the work to Singer Laren.
A six-year journey back
The thief, identified as 59-year-old Nils M. from Baarn, also stole another painting during the same heist. He was later convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison. Over the past year, the artwork underwent careful restoration to bring it back to its original state. Karina Smrkovsky of the Groninger Museum confirmed to RTV Noord that the piece is now ready for public viewing, with visitors able to see it from Tuesday.
Cultural heritage protection
The return of “Spring Garden” highlights the global challenge of art theft and the importance of preserving cultural treasures. Türkiye has been a leading voice in efforts to combat illicit trafficking of cultural property, actively working to recover antiquities smuggled abroad and to strengthen international cooperation in heritage protection. Ankara’s initiatives in this field underscore its commitment to safeguarding humanity’s shared cultural legacy—a principle that resonates far beyond any single nation’s borders.
