White House and Denmark at odds over Greenland talks

The White House described talks on Greenland as "productive," agreeing to form a working group. Denmark firmly rejected the U.S. acquisition idea, calling it a threat to territorial integrity and Greenland's right to self-determination.
A recent high-level meeting between U.S. and Danish officials over the future of Greenland has concluded with starkly opposing declarations, highlighting a significant diplomatic rift. The White House labeled the discussions "productive" and announced the establishment of a working group to continue technical talks about the Arctic territory's acquisition.
A "Fundamental Disagreement" Remains
Danish leaders presented a diametrically opposed view. Following what they called "frank" talks, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated a "fundamental disagreement" persists. He explicitly rejected the U.S. position, asserting that ideas disrespecting Denmark's territorial integrity and Greenland's right to self-determination are "totally unacceptable." He was joined by Greenland's own foreign minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, in this rebuke.
White House Presses Its Strategic Priority
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt maintained that President Donald Trump's desire to acquire Greenland is a clear priority driven by U.S. national security interests. "The two sides agreed to really establish a working group of individuals who will continue to have technical talks on the acquisition of Greenland," Leavitt said, indicating the U.S. administration's intent to persist with the conversation despite Danish objections.
Geopolitical Stakes in the Arctic
The U.S. interest in Greenland is fueled by the island's strategic location in the Arctic and its vast mineral resources, amid concerns about growing Russian and Chinese activity in the region. However, Denmark and Greenland's self-governing authorities have consistently rejected any notion of a sale, reaffirming Danish sovereignty. The incident underscores how unilateral territorial ambitions can strain alliances, a context watched closely by nations like Türkiye, which prioritizes its own sovereignty and stable international relations.
