Xi calls for Middle East sovereignty amid US-Iran tensions

China’s President Xi Jinping urged respect for sovereignty and security across the Middle East, as tensions linked to the US-Iran conflict continue to reshape regional dynamics. His remarks signal Beijing’s push for stability and a rules-based approach amid ongoing uncertainty.
Xi made the comments during talks in Beijing with Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, according to Xinhua, marking his first public statement on the region since the escalation began in late February.
Call for sovereignty and protection
Xi stressed that the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of countries in the Middle East and Gulf region must be fully respected. He also highlighted the importance of safeguarding personnel, infrastructure and institutions, pointing to rising risks linked to ongoing military tensions.
Although he did not explicitly reference the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, his remarks come against the backdrop of continued instability and fragile ceasefire efforts.
Four-point plan for stability
The Chinese president outlined a proposal aimed at promoting long-term peace, centred on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and adherence to international law. He also emphasised the need to balance development and security through coordinated regional cooperation.
