Xi Pyongyang trip may revive North Korea-US summit talks

South Korea said a possible visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pyongyang could reopen discussions about a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump as geopolitical diplomacy intensifies across Northeast Asia.
South Korean officials said Thursday that a reported visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to North Korea may create momentum for renewed diplomacy between Pyongyang and Washington, including the possibility of another summit involving North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump.
Seoul watches regional diplomacy closely
South Korea’s Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said major geopolitical changes are unfolding in Northeast Asia following recent high-level meetings involving China, Russia and the United States. Speaking in Seoul, Chung stated that if Xi’s visit to Pyongyang takes place, talks regarding a future Kim-Trump summit would “surely be discussed.”
His comments followed reports from Yonhap News Agency suggesting Xi could travel to North Korea as early as next week. The report cited signs of preparation in Pyongyang, including recent visits by Chinese security and protocol officials.

China remains cautious on visit reports
Beijing has not officially confirmed the trip. However, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun described China and North Korea as close neighbors with a long tradition of friendly exchanges.
Guo said ongoing cooperation between Beijing and Pyongyang contributes to regional peace and stability but avoided providing details about Xi’s possible schedule. China and North Korea are marking the 65th anniversary of their bilateral cooperation treaty this year, adding symbolic importance to any potential visit.
Trump and Putin meetings shape regional landscape
The discussion surrounding Xi’s reported trip comes shortly after US President Donald Trump completed a three-day visit to China. Russian President Vladimir Putin also visited Beijing this week for talks with Xi, highlighting increasing diplomatic activity among major powers.
South Korean officials said these developments are reshaping the strategic environment around the Korean Peninsula. Chung described the situation as “gigantic tectonic plates in motion” and urged policymakers to consider new options for stability, peace and economic cooperation in Northeast Asia.

Analysts believe renewed dialogue between North Korea, China and the United States could influence broader regional security issues, including nuclear negotiations, military tensions and trade routes affecting Asia-Pacific economies and countries.
