The 5th International Model OIC High School Summit has commenced in Istanbul, placing the Gaza conflict at the center of its diplomatic simulations. The four-day event brings together young delegates to replicate the work of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation, emphasizing justice for Palestine and youth leadership development.
The 5th International Model OIC High School Summit opened in Istanbul on Friday with a strong emphasis on the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum President Taha Ayhan highlighted the central role of Palestinian issues in this year's event, noting that students' focus on accountability for attacks against Palestinians reflects their moral conscience and sense of global responsibility.
Summit Structure and Palestinian Focus
Held from November 28 to December 1 at the Grand Cevahir Hotel & Convention Center, the summit simulates the workings of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation, providing high school students with practical experience in diplomacy and multilateral negotiation. This year's program, operating under the theme "Justice for Palestine: Resistance Against Oppression," places particular emphasis on the Al-Quds Committee and addresses both humanitarian and political dimensions of the Palestinian situation.
Educational Mission and Global Reach
Ayhan emphasized the rapid expansion of the Model OIC initiative, which now operates clubs in more than 800 universities and numerous high schools across over 70 countries. He stressed the importance of cultivating youth leadership early, aligning with Islamic teachings that encourage the pursuit of knowledge. The summit also tackles broader issues including post-conflict reconstruction, scientific cooperation, and environmental challenges.
Solidarity and Leadership Development
The ICYF president encouraged participants to engage in various forms of activism for the Palestinian cause, from boycott movements to effective social media advocacy. He announced the new MOIC Umrah Fellowship Program, which will fully fund 50 top-performing students for visits to Makkah and Madinah. The opening ceremony featured Turkish officials including Istanbul Governor Davut Gul and Deputy Education Minister Omer Faruk Yelkenci, with additional sessions scheduled featuring World Ethnosport Confederation President Necmeddin Bilal Erdogan and Türkiye's Communications Director Burhanettin Duran.
