Zelenskyy seeks major US drone deal amid shifting focus
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Wednesday that Kyiv is pursuing a comprehensive agreement with Washington on drone production, but White House approval remains pending. Zelenskyy expressed hope that escalating Middle East tensions might prompt greater US interest in the deal, while acknowledging the regional conflict has already diverted attention and impacted arms supplies to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed Wednesday that his government is actively seeking a major agreement with the United States to establish drone production capabilities, though the deal awaits formal approval from the White House. In a statement on Telegram, Zelenskyy detailed the proposed arrangement, which encompasses various drone types and air defense systems designed to operate as an integrated protective network against threats including Iranian-made Shahed munitions.

"We wanted to sign a major agreement with the United States on the production of drones, but we needed approval from the White House," Zelenskyy stated. "It was about various types of drones and air defense. They work as a single system and can protect against hundreds or thousands of Iranian 'Shaheds' and missiles." He expressed hope that recent developments in the Middle East might increase Washington's receptiveness, noting: "I hope that, perhaps, our American friends will now be more inclined towards such a decision, especially after the challenges we are seeing in the Middle East."

Drone deal details and strategic importance

The proposed agreement represents a significant expansion of US-Ukraine defense cooperation, potentially providing Kyiv with indigenous drone manufacturing capacity rather than relying solely on donated systems. Such capability would prove crucial for sustaining Ukraine's defensive operations against Russian forces, particularly as Western stockpiles face increasing strain. The integrated approach combining drones with air defense mirrors successful Ukrainian tactics that have neutralized numerous aerial threats throughout the conflict.

Middle East impact acknowledged

In separate comments to US media, Zelenskyy confirmed that the escalation in the Middle East has directly affected Ukraine, particularly regarding arms supplies. "The start of a new war in the Middle East inevitably leads to a certain shift in the attention of the international community," he observed, while emphasizing: "We need the focus to be on Ukraine. We need to keep that focus." The Ukrainian leader also addressed his negotiating position, stating: "I am not in a position to think about how to find a compromise acceptable to everyone; I have to defend the constitution, the independence of my country and its people."

Zelenskyy's concerns echo those previously voiced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who recently warned that the Iran conflict should not derail peace efforts in Ukraine. As regional crises multiply, Ukraine faces the challenge of maintaining international support while competing for attention with the escalating US-Israeli campaign against Iran, which has claimed approximately 1,300 lives since Feb. 28.
