Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with Syria’s interim leader Ahmad al-Sharaa in Damascus, agreeing to boost security cooperation and development. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attended the meeting, underscoring Ankara’s role in facilitating dialogue. The two leaders also discussed food security and energy challenges amid global tensions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to Damascus on Sunday for a face‑to‑face meeting with Syria’s Ahmad al-Sharaa, where the two leaders pledged closer collaboration on security and economic development. Writing on social media platform X, Zelenskyy confirmed that both sides aim to provide “greater” safety and expanded opportunities for their societies.

Security and Military Experience Exchange

Zelenskyy revealed that he and al-Sharaa discussed the ongoing Russia‑Ukraine war as well as regional security dynamics. “There is a strong interest in exchanging military and security experience. I appreciate the words of respect for our people,” the Ukrainian leader said, adding that he was grateful for Syria’s supportive stance.

Food Security and Infrastructure Cooperation

The talks also covered Ukraine’s potential as a reliable grain supplier and joint steps to strengthen regional food security. Zelenskyy acknowledged Syria’s pressing energy and infrastructure difficulties, stating: “We are ready to work together to expand opportunities for both our countries and their people.” The official Syrian news agency SANA reported that the two leaders stressed the importance of securing food supply routes amid ongoing international tensions.

Türkiye’s Diplomatic Role

Notably, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attended the discussions, highlighting Türkiye’s active mediation between Kyiv and Damascus. The meeting builds on a joint statement signed last September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, when Ukraine and Syria formally restored diplomatic relations after a years‑long rupture.
