European security cannot be reduced to EU: Fidan

Türkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized this week that European security requires a comprehensive framework beyond the European Union, stressing Ankara's central role in the continent's defense architecture and the need for NATO to build long-term strategic capacity.
Türkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized this week that European security cannot be reduced to the European Union framework, calling for a comprehensive approach that recognizes Ankara's central role in the continent's defense architecture.
NATO strategic vision
Speaking at an event organized by the Foreign Ministry's Center for Strategic Research and Chatham House in Ankara, Fidan stated that NATO must prioritize building long-term strategic capacity rather than merely reacting to existing threats. He noted that despite current tensions between Washington and Brussels, he does not anticipate an uncontrolled crisis at the upcoming alliance summit, adding that US President Donald Trump's participation would prove crucial in managing transatlantic differences.
Defense industry partnerships
The minister stressed that European security demands a comprehensive approach extending beyond EU borders, underscoring that NATO's defense industrial base should not be viewed through an exclusively EU-centered lens. He described both Türkiye and Britain as natural and essential partners in European defense cooperation, citing their robust defense industries as vital assets for the alliance.
Ukraine and summit preparations
Fidan reiterated Türkiye's unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, while maintaining that diplomatic channels with Russia must remain open. He urged European leaders to interpret US calls for greater burden-sharing as an opportunity for strategic growth rather than psychological pressure, arguing that enhanced defense capabilities serve both NATO's future and Europe's strategic resilience.
Fidan revealed that securing Trump's attendance at the Ankara summit had presented the most challenging aspect of preparations. "the difficult part has been overcome," he said, noting that the president's confirmation marks a significant diplomatic milestone for the gathering.
