Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has described US President Donald Trump as the singular leader capable of achieving comprehensive peace in the Middle East during their bilateral discussions in Sharm el-Sheikh. The Egyptian leader's endorsement came Monday as the two presidents prepared for an international summit focused on solidifying the Gaza ceasefire agreement and advancing regional stability.

Speaking ahead of the multilateral peace gathering, President Sisi characterized the Gaza ceasefire arrangement as a "remarkable achievement" and expressed particular appreciation for Trump's diplomatic efforts in reaching the agreement. The Egyptian president emphasized the critical importance of ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza and facilitating the return of remains of deceased Israeli hostages to their families, highlighting ongoing humanitarian priorities alongside political negotiations.

The bilateral meeting followed Monday's completion of prisoner exchanges between Hamas and Israel, which saw 20 living Israeli hostages released in return for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners under the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement. Hamas officials additionally committed to transferring the remains of four Israeli captives on Monday, addressing one of the key humanitarian concerns raised during negotiations. These developments represent tangible progress following Trump's announcement last week of the comprehensive peace plan initially outlined on September 29.

The ceasefire agreement's second phase envisions establishing new governance structures in Gaza that exclude Hamas participation, forming a multinational security force, and implementing disarmament measures. These ambitious objectives follow extensive military operations since October 2023 that resulted in substantial Palestinian casualties and widespread destruction throughout the Gaza territory, creating both urgent humanitarian needs and complex political challenges for the reconstruction phase.
