The general view is that the moment Netanyahu said he accepted Trump’s “Gaza Plan,” he was already thinking about how to undermine it. Netanyahu is the kind of killer who would do anything to stay in power. Trump, meanwhile, is trying—despite Netanyahu—to save Israel from becoming a pariah state isolated from the rest of the world. Netanyahu had previously said he didn’t care about Israel’s isolation, as long as the United States continued to stand behind it.

A significant number of Jews in Israel, the U.S., and other Western countries believe that the situation Netanyahu has led the Jewish people into is unsustainable. The growing weakness of the so-called “Israel Lobby” in the U.S.—Israel’s protective shield—confirms this perception.

Among young Republicans under 40, who represent the most enthusiastic base of Trump’s “America First” movement, discomfort with Israel’s dominance over U.S. foreign policy is deepening. For this group, “America First” does not mean “Israel First.” Some commentators believe that Trump is pressuring Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire in order to appease his supporters.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Margaret Brennan on CBS News that Israel’s growing international isolation made ending the ‘war’ in Gaza necessary. Rubio also pointed out that the backlash against Israel in American public opinion is damaging Israel’s global standing. With those remarks, he implied that the long-persisting pro-Israel sentiment in the U.S. has shifted in a way that should serve as a wake-up call for Israel.

For liberal Zionists and anti-Zionist Jews in America, the Israeli regime under Netanyahu has become a factory that constantly produces anti-Semitism around the world. Liberal and anti-Zionist Jews do not want to be seen as complicit in the genocide Israel is carrying out in Gaza. Most recently, anti-Zionist Jews in New York took to the streets on Yom Kippur, which they describe as a “day of atonement and repentance,” to fiercely condemn the genocide in Gaza.

On Thursday, demonstrations organized by the group “Rabbis for Ceasefire” led to the arrest of more than 50 people. Protesters wearing Palestinian keffiyehs were handcuffed and detained by police while chanting “Long live Gaza.”

Brad Lander, who has been elected New York City Comptroller for 12 years, spoke at the protest, calling on the U.S. not to be complicit in Israel’s genocide and to stop funding Israel with American taxpayers’ money. Lander, the highest-ranking Jewish official in New York, had previously run for mayor in the Democratic primary. He came in third after Zohran Mamdani and former governor Andrew Cuomo, and he is now an ally of Mamdani.

Indian-American politician Zohran Mamdani said that if Netanyahu came to New York, he should be arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. While many other mayoral hopefuls said their first trip after being elected would be to Israel, Mamdani declared he would stay in the city to serve New Yorkers. It was especially striking that Mamdani, who defends Palestine, received 17 percent more votes than other candidates among Jewish voters in the primaries. Recent polls also show that Mamdani continues to secure the lion’s share of the Jewish vote.

The Democratic Party’s establishment and leadership traditionally endorse the winner of the primaries. However, despite Mamdani’s first-place finish, the fact that House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer have yet to publicly support him is seen as telling. Both were elected with donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the most powerful arm of the “Israel Lobby,” which explains their reluctance to back Mamdani.

Jeffries and Schumer’s stance against Mamdani has sparked backlash from the “Young Democrats,” the fiercest critics of U.S. support for Israel. Meanwhile, whether Republican or Democrat, New York’s billionaire Zionists are united in their efforts to prevent Mamdani’s victory in the November 4 election—and are using every trick in the book to do so.

The November 4 elections will also serve as a test of the “Israel Lobby’s” influence. If Mamdani wins, it will signal that the vast sums of money the lobby pours into politics have lost their power. In that sense, the New York elections carry broader significance as an indicator for the national political landscape.
