Prior to his official visit to Ankara, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul underscored Türkiye's role as a strategic NATO ally. He stated that their discussions will focus on key regional issues, including securing a lasting Gaza ceasefire, the political future of Syria, and the ongoing war in Ukraine, highlighting areas for deepened foreign policy collaboration.

Germany's Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, has affirmed that Berlin views Türkiye as a "strategic partner" within NATO, pointing to significant potential for enhanced cooperation on the global stage. The statement was made ahead of his diplomatic meetings in the Turkish capital, where a broad agenda covering Middle Eastern peace efforts and the conflict in Ukraine is expected.

Key Discussions on Regional Stability

Wadephul detailed that the talks with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, will address urgent international matters. "In the Middle East conflict, Türkiye contributed to the historic ceasefire in Gaza through its mediating role," he noted, referencing the pause in hostilities brokered through a US-backed plan. He added that while the release of hostages and the truce are significant achievements, the work towards a secure future for Gaza is just beginning, emphasizing the need for sustained humanitarian access.

Türkiye's Critical Role in NATO and Black Sea

The German minister further elaborated on the multifaceted partnership. "Türkiye is a key strategic partner for us within the NATO alliance," Wadephul stressed. He also highlighted Türkiye's unique responsibilities, stating, “As the guardian of the Montreux Convention, Türkiye also has direct responsibility for access to the Black Sea. Istanbul is also an important venue for negotiations.” Their shared objective, he said, is to end the war in Ukraine more swiftly by further isolating Russia.

Broadening the Bilateral Agenda

Beyond immediate conflict zones, the ministers are set to review the evolving relationship between Türkiye and the European Union, ongoing defense industry projects, and other matters central to the NATO alliance. The day-long visit underscores the continued importance of the Ankara-Berlin axis in navigating complex geopolitical landscapes, with Türkiye's active diplomacy being a central point of discussion.
