Türkiye's hidden treasure: The labyrinth of Dalyan Canal revealed

Aerial drone footage has unveiled the stunning labyrinth-like reed beds of the Dalyan Canal in Muğla, one of the world’s rarest ecosystems. Stretching 10 kilometers, the waterway connects Köyceğiz Lake to İztuzu Beach, hosting over 180 bird species while naturally filtering water—a natural wonder drawing visitors to Türkiye’s southwestern coast.

A natural water filter and wildlife haven

The reeds play a crucial ecological role, explained Okutur. Throughout the day, seawater flows into the lake, and by morning, the lake’s current pushes the water back toward the sea. “The reeds along the lake and canal filter the water, drawing organic matter into their roots to sustain themselves,” he said. “They are the lifeline of Köyceğiz Lake, Dalyan Canal, and İztuzu.”

Beyond filtration, the reeds provide habitat for more than 180 bird species, as well as reptiles and other wildlife. The 10-kilometer waterway is recognized as one of Europe’s best-protected open areas, drawing birdwatchers and ecotourists from around the world.

Yücel Okutur, head of the Dalaman, Ortaca, Köyceğiz Association of Touristic Hotels and Tourism Operators (DOKTOB), emphasized the global significance of this landscape. “This ecosystem is in the form of a labyrinth rarely found in the world,” he said, noting that the reeds lining the canal and lake serve as both a visual treasure and a vital natural filter.

A backdrop for tourism and history

Okutur noted that the reed labyrinth has become a favorite backdrop for visitors, who are also drawn to the region’s rich historical heritage. The nearby ancient city of Kaunos, with its rock tombs overlooking the canal, adds a layer of cultural depth to the natural setting. The combination of unspoiled nature, historical ruins, and the unique tidal exchange of fresh and saltwater offers an unforgettable experience for travelers.

As Türkiye continues to promote its natural and cultural assets, the Dalyan Canal stands out as a prime example of sustainable tourism potential. Protected under conservation regulations, the area remains a hidden gem that authorities and local stakeholders are committed to preserving for future generations.
