Paraguay shock Germany in World Cup penalty shootout

Players of Paraguay celebrate the victory after the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match between Germany and Paraguay at Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) in Foxborough, Massachusetts, United States on June 29, 2026.

Paraguay defeated Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout on Monday to advance to the World Cup Round of 16, handing the four-time champions their first-ever elimination from spot-kicks in tournament history and booking a date with either France or Sweden.

Julio Enciso scored Paraguay's first-ever knockout stage goal in World Cup history in the 42nd minute, rising unmarked inside the penalty area to meet Matias Galarza's inviting cross with a powerful header beyond Manuel Neuer. The strike rewarded Paraguay's disciplined defensive display, as the underdogs spent much of the first half defending deep in a compact low block while Germany dominated possession.

Havertz equalizer sends match to extra time

Germany found their equalizer nine minutes after the interval when Kai Havertz rose above the defense to guide Florian Wirtz's excellent delivery inside the far post with a precise header past Orlando Gill. Neither side could find a winner in normal time, sending the match into extra time — the first knockout fixture at this edition of the tournament to require an additional 30 minutes.

Germany suffer first-ever World Cup shootout loss

Jonathan Tah thought he had won the match for Germany with a leaping header toward the end of the first period of extra time, but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the Paraguay goalkeeper. The second period saw Paraguay mount sustained pressure without finding a breakthrough, setting up a penalty shootout where Gill saved Germany's first kick and Nick Woltemade missed another before Tah sent the decisive penalty over the bar to seal a 4-3 victory.

Paraguay set for Round of 16 clash

Paraguay will face either France or Sweden in the Round of 16 after eliminating the four-time champions in one of the biggest shocks in recent World Cup memory. Germany had previously won all four penalty shootouts they had contested at the tournament, making Monday's defeat a historic first for the footballing powerhouse.
