Investigation and arrests
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation. Of the 17 suspects initially detained, 12 were processed, leading to nine formal arrests. Two suspects were released under judicial control, one was freed after questioning, and three remain in police custody. Two of the attackers are still receiving medical treatment.
Attack details and Daesh link
Police findings indicate that the attackers arrived in a rented vehicle, exited with backpacks and long-barreled weapons, and fired on nearby police officers, who returned fire. Authorities have determined that the attack was planned by Daesh. The suspects are believed to have operated within the group’s hierarchy, maintained ties to the organization, and knowingly assisted the attackers in line with its orders. Three terrorists were neutralized during the gunfight, while two officers suffered minor injuries. Türkiye’s interior minister noted that one suspect had links to a group exploiting religion, and another had a prior drug-related record. The justice minister added that initial findings confirm the attack specifically targeted Turkish police officers.
