Belgian defense chief: 'No security scenario without Türkiye' in Europe
AA
Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler (not seen) meets Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken at the 17th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2025) held at Istanbul Fair Center, organized by the Ministry of National Defense with support from the Presidency of Defense Industries and under the management of the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, on July 22, 2025.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has emphatically stated that European security is inseparable from Türkiye's involvement, praising its defense industry and strategic role. He singled out Türkiye's advanced drone technology as a key area for cooperation against hybrid threats and highlighted major bilateral engagements planned for 2026.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has declared that a credible security framework for Europe cannot be envisioned without the full participation of Türkiye. In an interview with Anadolu, the minister underscored Türkiye's indispensable geopolitical position, military capabilities, and advanced technological sector as vital assets for NATO and European defense.

Geopolitical Necessity and Industrial Strength

"Everybody who knows a bit about geopolitics knows that we need Türkiye," Francken stated, citing the nation's strategic location, military prowess, and innovation capacity. He elaborated, "We need Turkish people, we need Turkish industry, Turkish politics, Turkish diplomacy. I don't believe in a scenario without Türkiye within our framework." His comments followed the inaugural Türkiye-Belgium Defense Industry Day, where he praised the strength of Türkiye's defense sector compared to Belgium's smaller-scale capabilities.

Key Area for Cooperation: Counter-Drone Technology

Minister Francken identified drone technology as a critical field for bilateral learning and collaboration. Acknowledging Türkiye as "one of the most progressive countries" in drone innovation, he expressed a strong desire for Belgian companies to learn from Turkish expertise to counter hybrid threats. "We really can learn a lot from your country," he said, emphasizing the practical benefits of such a partnership for Belgium's national security.

A Landmark Year for Bilateral Ties in 2026

Looking ahead, Francken described 2026 as a pivotal year for Türkiye-Belgium relations. He confirmed that Princess Astrid will lead a major Belgian economic and trade delegation to Türkiye in May. Furthermore, he noted the significance of the NATO Leaders' Summit scheduled for Ankara in July 2026, which will bring together defense industry leaders from across the alliance. He expressed optimism that the year would yield substantial agreements in technology and defense, strengthening mutual security.
