Belgian queen: Women’s work empowerment strengthens economies

Queen Mathilde of Belgium told a panel in Istanbul that empowering women professionally boosts economic resilience and innovation. She called for deliberate structural choices, including pay transparency and childcare investment, while Türkiye’s family minister highlighted local policies supporting women entrepreneurs.
Belgium’s Queen Mathilde has declared that scientifically proven evidence shows empowering women in their careers strengthens economies, resilience, and innovation capacity. Speaking at an Istanbul panel titled “The Business World and Entrepreneurship as Drivers of Women’s Empowerment” during her official visit to Türkiye, the Queen stated: “When women are fully integrated into the economy at all levels, the whole of society reaps the rewards.”
Structural choices and workplace safety
The Queen emphasised that equality is “not achieved by chance, but through deliberate and structural choices,” citing Belgium’s experience. She called for legislative measures promoting gender balance, pay transparency, social dialogue, and investment in accessible childcare. She also stressed that women’s empowerment is inseparable from “safe, respectful and dignified working environments,” noting that gender-based violence undermines trust and leadership potential. Belgium, she said, adopts an integrated legal framework combining prevention, protection, and accountability. On digitalisation and AI, she warned: “These changes are not gender-neutral. Without intentional policy choices, they risk reinforcing existing inequalities.”
Türkiye’s policies and bilateral cooperation
Turkish Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Ozdemir Goktas told the same panel that women’s representation in business is directly linked to development and social welfare. “When women establish a business, they do not only create economic value, they create employment, they strengthen local development,” she said. She noted that under President Erdoğan’s leadership, Türkiye has implemented a women’s empowerment strategy document and action plan, supporting women in employment, entrepreneurship, and the digital economy. She expressed hope that strong Türkiye-Belgium ties would yield new partnerships in women’s entrepreneurship and inclusive development.
