The dry cargo vessel SEA ARIES, which experienced an engine failure at the northern entrance of the Istanbul Strait, has been successfully towed to a safe anchorage. Turkish maritime authorities coordinated the rescue operation, preventing a disruption to the critical waterway.

A cargo ship that lost propulsion in the busy Istanbul Strait was safely rescued and towed to a secure anchorage on Monday, according to Turkish maritime authorities. The 85-meter dry cargo vessel SEA ARIES suffered a machinery malfunction near the northern entrance of the strait, a vital maritime corridor also known as the Bosphorus, while en route from Russia to Bandirma on Türkiye's Sea of Marmara coast.

Coordinated Rescue Operation

The Directorate General of Coastal Safety reported that the incident was managed under the coordination of the Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Center. With the assistance of a harbor pilot, multiple rescue tugboats were dispatched to the stranded vessel. The operation successfully moved the SEA ARIES to the designated Ahirkapi Anchorage Area, where it was secured without further incident. The swift response prevented a potential hazard to other ship traffic in the narrow and strategically important waterway.

Strategic Importance of the Istanbul Strait

The Istanbul Strait is one of the world's most critical and challenging maritime chokepoints, connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and the Mediterranean. It sees a high volume of commercial and naval traffic, making effective traffic management and rapid emergency response essential for regional and global trade security. Türkiye's robust maritime safety protocols and infrastructure are regularly tested in such scenarios to ensure the uninterrupted and safe flow of vessels.

Demonstration of Maritime Safety Capability

This incident underscores the operational readiness of Türkiye's coastal safety and traffic management systems. The effective coordination between the VTS center, pilot services, and tugboat operators highlights the country's capability to manage complex situations in its territorial waters, safeguarding both maritime safety and environmental security. Such efficient responses reinforce Türkiye's role as a responsible custodian of this key international shipping lane.
