Erdoğan: I would certainly approve death penalty

Turkish President Erdoğan, after attending the funeral of the district governor martyred by PKK, says he would certainly approve execution, if approved by Turkish assembly
The funeral of Muhammet Fatih Safitürk, the governor of Mardin's Derik district who was martyred in the Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) bomb attack, was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu.
After the funeral that was held on Saturday, President Erdoğan said that Turkey will eradicate the terrorism by continuing to put all its efforts in thwarting terrorist organizations.
"He was appointed as trustee. I met him in the Presidential Complex," said Erdoğan expressing his gratitude for those who were able to attend the ceremony for Safitürk.
Erdoğan also gave the signal on bringing back capital punishment by informing that he is backing the return of the death penalty.
"I would certainly approve it; if it is approved by the Turkish assembly, "he added.
Meanwhile, two Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists, suspected of carrying out the assassination of a district governor in Turkey's southeastern Mardin province, have been captured in a raid on Friday.
A district governor in southeastern Turkey, who has been wounded by the PKK terror attack, died early Friday in the hospital where he was receiving treatment.
Muhammed Fatih Safitürk, governor of Derik district in Mardin province, was injured on Tuesday when PKK terrorists fired a rocket launcher targeting the district governorate building.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU and resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in July 2015, after breaking a ceasefire agreement with Ankara that had been in force for roughly two years.

Since July 2015, PKK terrorist attacks have killed around 700 security personnel and claimed the lives of many civilians, including women and children, while nearly 8,000 PKK terrorists were killed in army operations.
