Erdogan says Israel using 'made-up' reasons to breach Gaza truce
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Israel of breaching the Gaza ceasefire using manufactured justifications, while praising Hamas for maintaining restraint. Speaking in Istanbul, Erdogan highlighted the deaths of over 270 journalists and thousands of educators in Gaza, describing the situation as a deliberate policy of mass killing. The Turkish leader reaffirmed Ankara's commitment to Palestinian statehood and humanitarian assistance.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has strongly criticized Israel for violating the Gaza truce under false pretenses, while acknowledging Hamas's disciplined approach to maintaining the ceasefire despite provocations. The president made these remarks during his address at the Science Dissemination Awards ceremony held in Istanbul on Saturday.

Media and education casualties highlighted

President Erdogan pointed to significant casualties among media professionals and educators in Gaza, noting that international media organizations have failed to adequately report on their colleagues' deaths. He stated that Israeli forces have killed more than 270 journalists, along with 13,500 students, 830 teachers, and 193 academics. According to Erdogan, these figures represent a systematic and intentional policy of mass killing that has deprived over 785,000 students of their educational rights.

International advocacy efforts

The Turkish president emphasized Ankara's continued determination to raise these issues on global platforms, including during his recent discussions at the G20 Leaders' Summit in South Africa. Erdogan also marked the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People through a social media post, extending greetings to Palestinians and outlining Türkiye's humanitarian efforts as winter approaches in Gaza.

Commitment to Palestinian statehood

Reaffirming Türkiye's diplomatic position, Erdogan declared that Ankara will persistently work toward maintaining the ceasefire and providing humanitarian assistance while advocating for a just and lasting peace solution. The president vowed that Türkiye would "resolutely" continue to support the two-state solution framework until the establishment of a free, sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. The annual observance day, established by the UN in 1977, highlights ongoing Palestinian aspirations for self-determination three decades after the UN partition resolution.
