President Erdogan warns against targeting ships in the Black Sea

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea are detrimental to all parties, undermining maritime safety. Speaking in Ankara, he emphasized Türkiye's regional role, citing aid to Gaza and efforts in Syria while urging strength to protect national interests.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a stern warning on Tuesday against the targeting of commercial and civilian ships in the Black Sea, stating that such actions serve no one's interests. Addressing ambassadors in the capital Ankara, he highlighted the threat to navigation safety posed by recent attacks linked to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Diplomatic Warnings and Regional Stability Role
Erdogan revealed that Ankara has conveyed direct warnings to both sides involved in the war regarding the security of shipping lanes. He reiterated that attacks within Türkiye's exclusive economic zone are unacceptable. The President framed Türkiye's proactive stance as a necessity, stating the nation has “no other option but to be strong” to defend its interests and support allied nations.
Humanitarian Leadership and Views on Regional Crises
Outlining Türkiye's diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives, Erdogan pointed to the delivery of over 103,000 tons of aid to Gaza despite significant restrictions. He also identified Israel's policies as the primary obstacle to lasting security in Syria, where a post-Assad administration has been in place for a year. On the refugee issue, he noted that 580,000 Syrians have returned from Türkiye, with numbers expected to rise as stability improves.
Advancing Diplomacy in Syria and the South Caucasus
The Turkish leader urged progress on the March 10 agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), cautioning that resistance to it could trigger a new crisis. Turning to the South Caucasus, Erdogan expressed that dialogue with Azerbaijan continues and the normalization process with Armenia is advancing, with both countries close to finalizing a peace deal.
