Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (R) and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte (L) welcome US President Donald Trump ahead of the North Atlantic Council meeting, held as part of the 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Ankara, Turkiye, on July 8, 2026.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan welcomed NATO leaders at the 36th summit in Ankara, greeting each head of state including President Trump. A family photo was taken before Erdoğan and Secretary General Rutte delivered opening remarks, with defence investment and Ukraine topping the agenda.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday welcomed leaders attending the 36th NATO summit in the capital Ankara. Erdoğan and Secretary-General Mark Rutte greeted each head of state or government, including US President Donald Trump, as they arrived at the venue at the presidential complex. The NATO leaders posed for a family photo before Erdoğan and Rutte delivered welcoming remarks.

Summit agenda

The steps taken in terms of the decision to increase defence investments, and the alliance’s efforts in the areas of deterrence and defence, will be addressed at the summit. The leaders will also exchange views on threats, risks and challenges against the Euro-Atlantic geography, and address the situation in Ukraine and the developments occurring in the south of the alliance. Erdoğan is expected to hold meetings with some of his fellow leaders on the sidelines of the summit.

Türkiye’s NATO legacy

Türkiye – a member of NATO for over 70 years – joined the alliance in 1952. The Ankara summit is the second NATO leaders’ meeting hosted by Türkiye, following the 2004 summit in Istanbul. The gathering comes as the alliance faces heightened tensions with Iran, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and shifting transatlantic burden-sharing dynamics. Erdoğan’s role as host underscores Türkiye’s enduring strategic importance within the alliance.
