EU recognition boosts Türkiye’s Maras coregi, culinary heritage

Türkiye has secured another victory in protecting its traditional cuisine as the beloved Maras coregi from Kahramanmaras has officially been listed under EU geographical indication. The registration increases Türkiye’s portfolio of protected products in Europe, while highlighting the country’s rich food culture extending well beyond its borders.
Maras coregi, a celebrated pastry originating from Türkiye’s southern city of Kahramanmaras, has now been registered under the European Union’s geographical indication scheme. The announcement was made by Türkiye’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli, who emphasized the importance of safeguarding national culinary heritage on the international stage.
A growing list of protected Turkish specialties
According to Yumakli, the inclusion of Maras coregi brings the number of EU-recognized Turkish products to 44, joining notable regional items such as Caglayancerit walnut and the traditional Maras tarhanasi soup base. “Kahramanmaras continues to carry its centuries-old flavors beyond our borders,” the minister noted in a message on NSosyal.

Often prepared for the holy month of Ramadan, Maras coregi is distinguished by its method of preparation, including its signature dough and the use of stone ovens. The pastry has long been considered a staple in households across the region, reflecting both culinary tradition and local craftsmanship.
