Fidan accuses Israel of seeking pretext to resume Gaza war

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated that Israel is looking for excuses to break the Gaza ceasefire and restart hostilities. The remarks came during talks in Ankara with Estonia's top diplomat, where both ministers also discussed European security, Türkiye's EU accession bid, and a planned meeting of eight foreign ministers in Istanbul on the Gaza crisis.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan asserted on Friday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is actively seeking pretexts to violate the current ceasefire and resume military operations in Gaza. During a joint press conference in Ankara with Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, Fidan emphasized that for lasting peace and regional security, Israel must adhere to the truce.
International Diplomacy on Gaza
Minister Fidan announced that foreign ministers from eight nations will convene in Istanbul on Monday to assess the situation in Gaza and discuss a future roadmap. He highlighted that a foundation for a peace plan was laid during a previous meeting in New York and stated that Türkiye continues to deliver humanitarian aid to the region, with officials from its health and disaster agencies active in Rafah.
Estonian Support and Bilateral Ties
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "catastrophic" and called for significant pressure on Israel. He also expressed strong support for Türkiye's EU membership bid, describing the country as a "highly valuable and strong partner." Tsahkna acknowledged Türkiye's strategic role in NATO and noted Estonia's ongoing defense purchases from its Turkish ally.
Broader Regional Security Issues
The diplomats also addressed the Russia-Ukraine war, with Fidan stressing the need for a fair and lasting solution and continued diplomatic efforts. The discussion further covered Türkiye's role in European security architectures, including its participation in the Three Seas Initiative, and the importance of updating the EU-Türkiye customs union and facilitating visa processes.
