Fidan, Araghchi discuss US‑Iran talks as ceasefire holds

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone call Tuesday to discuss the latest developments in US‑Iran negotiations. The conversation took place amid a fragile two‑week ceasefire following the collapse of rare direct talks in Islamabad over the weekend.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke by phone Tuesday with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to assess the situation in ongoing US‑Iran negotiations, Turkish diplomatic sources confirmed. The call came as a two‑week ceasefire holds following the collapse of rare direct talks between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad over the weekend. The negotiations, aimed at ending the conflict that began on 28 February, ended without an agreement.
Conflict Toll and Retaliation
More than 3,300 people have been killed in US‑Israeli airstrikes in Iran since February, according to Iranian authorities. Tehran retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting Israel, Iraq, Jordan and Gulf countries hosting US military assets before the ceasefire was announced last week. The United States has since imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports, while Iran continues to restrict shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Türkiye’s Diplomatic Role
Ankara has consistently supported de‑escalation and diplomatic engagement throughout the crisis. Fidan’s call with Araghchi underscores Türkiye’s continued efforts to maintain communication channels between all parties and to help stabilise the region. The two ministers also discussed broader regional developments, including the situation in Lebanon and the need to prevent further escalation.
