Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone call with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas to discuss recent developments surrounding the two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, diplomatic sources said Friday. According to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources, Fidan and Kallas spoke on the latest situation under the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. The two officials also exchanged views on the broader global implications of the temporary truce, the sources said.

Ceasefire context

The US and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday, brokered by Pakistan, as a step toward a possible broader agreement to halt the conflict that the US and Israel launched on Feb. 28, which has left thousands dead and wounded. However, disputes remain over whether the ceasefire covers Lebanon, with Israeli attacks on Lebanon continuing.

EU position

The EU has maintained a position of supporting diplomatic efforts to end the conflict while not participating in military action. EU foreign policy chief Kallas has previously called for an exit from the war, not escalation, and has expressed support for a ceasefire.

Turkish diplomacy

Türkiye has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts throughout the conflict, with President Erdoğan and Fidan holding numerous calls with regional and international counterparts to advocate for de-escalation and a return to dialogue.
