Gül approves closure of preparatory schools
Turkey''s President Abdullah Gül approved on Wednesday a controversial law closing the private preparatory schools, many of which are run by followers of the US-based praise Gülen, in Turkey.
According to the long-debated draft bill, which was passed by the Parliament earlier this month, the private preparatory schools will be shut down by September 1th 2015 and they will be turned into dormitories, primary schools, high schools and public-run education centres. This regulation is due to be ensure until the end of 2018/2019 educational term.
Under the new law, the activities of public-run centres will be reviewed so as to educate pupils, aged 12 and under. This law will also enable those, who served as teachers for these preparatory schools, to work as a teacher in the civil service if they can pass an oral examination without sitting for the Public Personnel Selection Examination, KPSS.
