Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban praised Türkiye as the "only successful mediator" in the Ukraine war and declared the Turkic world a rising global force during a visit to Istanbul. He highlighted strong bilateral ties in energy, defense, and politics.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has lauded Türkiye's growing geopolitical influence and the rise of the Turkic world as a dynamic force during high-level talks in Istanbul on Monday. In a joint press conference with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Orban emphasized Türkiye's unique diplomatic role, particularly in mediating the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Erdogan as the 'only successful mediator'
Prime Minister Orban expressed strong appreciation for Ankara's peace efforts, describing President Erdogan as "the only successful mediator" in the Ukraine war process. He reiterated Budapest's position that the conflict cannot be resolved on the battlefield, stressing the necessity of negotiated peace. Orban's remarks underscore a shared strategic outlook between Hungary and Türkiye on the necessity of diplomacy over prolonged warfare.
Vision of a rising 'Turkish century'
Orban revealed that President Erdogan had shared a vision of a transforming world order where the Turkic world gathers significant energy and influence. "I observed a grand vision behind the concept of 'Turkish century,'" Orban stated, acknowledging the strategic re-emergence of Turkic nations. Hungary, an observer member of the Organization of Turkic States, considers its relationship with the Turkic world to be of great importance, aligning its foreign policy with this ascending bloc.
Solidifying energy and defense cooperation
The Hungarian leader highlighted concrete areas of deepening cooperation, notably energy security. He thanked Türkiye for ensuring the transfer of natural gas, noting that 7.5 billion cubic meters have been delivered to Hungary via the TurkStream pipeline this year. Orban also pointed to robust collaboration in the defense industry, a sector of growing priority for Europe. Additionally, he pledged Hungarian support for Türkiye's migration policy within EU and US forums.
