Single image ignites Greek fury over Turkish naval drill

A photograph from Türkiye's DENİZKURDU-II/2026 military exercise has sent shockwaves through Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration. The image shows Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek military attachés seated side-by-side, a moment Greek media has condemned as a diplomatic trap orchestrated by Ankara.
Türkiye’s sprawling DENİZKURDU-II/2026 drill, which concluded recently across the Black, Marmara, Aegean, and Eastern Mediterranean seas, has become a flashpoint not just for its military might but for a single, now-infamous photograph. The exercise, involving 125 naval assets, 60 aircraft, and roughly 18,000 personnel, served as a powerful demonstration of Türkiye’s growing domestic defence capabilities. Yet, it was a seemingly minor diplomatic moment during the Distinguished Observers Day that has dominated headlines, triggering a political crisis in Athens and Nicosia.
Greek media decries ‘Turkish trap’
The controversial image, which spread rapidly on social media, depicts the military attaché of the TRNC sitting alongside his Greek counterpart while observing the drill. Greek outlets have reacted with fury, accusing their own government of a catastrophic blunder. Pentapostagma labelled the incident a "Turkish trap" and laid blame squarely on the Turkish General Staff, suggesting the photograph creates a perception of formal contact between Greece and the TRNC. Newsbreak ran a headline questioning how the Turkish military managed to "humiliate" Greece during the exercise, while VoiceNews reported that the "calm waters" policy of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Defence Minister Nikos Dendias has effectively collapsed due to this diplomatic misstep.
Greek Cypriots lament propaganda failure
The fallout has extended to the Greek Cypriot administration, where analysts have decried the incident as a tactical victory for Turkish diplomacy. Speaking to Simerini, analyst Yiannos Charalambides conceded that the Greek side had fallen into a "trap," stating that the officer's presence legally and politically legitimises the "so-called state" of the TRNC. 24 News posed a pointed question, asking what business a Greek officer had sitting alongside the representative of what it termed "occupation forces" in Cyprus.
Turkish firepower takes centre stage
Amid the diplomatic storm, the exercise itself showcased Türkiye’s advanced naval arsenal. The Distinguished Observers Day featured successful test firings of eight missiles and a heavy torpedo, underlining the country's commitment to its "Blue Homeland" doctrine. Key systems included the AKYA heavy torpedo, launched from a submarine, which struck and sank its target, and the ATMACA anti-ship missile, which demonstrated pinpoint accuracy from a challenging angle.
Domestic systems prove their mettle
The TCG İSTANBUL frigate successfully fired a HİSAR-D RF medium-range air defence missile using the domestically produced MİDLAS vertical launch system, destroying an aerial target. Further demonstrating Türkiye’s expanding unmanned capabilities, a BAYRAKTAR TB3 SİHA, operating from the TCG ANADOLU, struck an ALBATROS unmanned surface vehicle with MAM-L munitions. Concurrently, an AKSUNGUR SİHA launched a MAM-T missile, successfully neutralising another surface target.
