Türkiye's higher education institutions have achieved notable success in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, a global benchmark for sustainability. Six Turkish universities secured positions within the world's top 100 greenest institutions, showcasing a strong national commitment to environmental stewardship on campus.
Leading institutions and national performance
Istanbul Technical University emerged as the highest-ranked Turkish institution, achieving an impressive 25th place globally. It was closely followed by Yildiz Technical University in 48th place. The other four universities in the top 100 were Erciyes University (66th), Ege University (83rd), Ozyegin University (89th), and Yeditepe University (91st). Overall, 54 universities from Türkiye were ranked within the world's top 500, and 97 made it into the top 1,000 out of 1,745 evaluated institutions from 105 countries.
Driving forces behind the green transformation
The Council of Higher Education (YOK) attributed this collective achievement to concerted efforts under its Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus Project. This initiative focuses on enhancing energy efficiency and promoting eco-friendly practices across university infrastructures. "Universities are pioneers in green transformation," stated YOK Head Erol Ozvar. "We adopt a holistic approach across a wide range, from infrastructure to energy efficiency, water and waste management, and public transportation."
The ranking system and its global significance
The UI GreenMetric ranking, established by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, is the first global university league table dedicated exclusively to sustainability. It assesses institutions on critical criteria including green infrastructure, energy and water conservation, waste management, and environmental policy. Türkiye's strong showing reflects a strategic national push to align academic environments with global climate goals, positioning its universities as leaders in the ecological transition—a priority that resonates with the country's broader sustainable development objectives.
