Turkish leaders opened the International Strategic Communication Summit in Istanbul, gathering officials from 38 countries to address information warfare, regional conflicts, and the breakdown of the post-World War II order. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz warned that modern threats now arrive through manipulation rather than bullets.

The International Strategic Communication Summit (Stratcom Summit) 2026 commenced Friday in Istanbul, drawing senior officials from 38 nations to confront the cascading crises reshaping the global landscape. Organized by Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, the two-day gathering features Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and National Intelligence Organization Director Ibrahim Kalin among more than 60 top officials, including 11 ministers from 10 countries. The summit’s theme—“Disruption in the International System: Crises, Narratives, and the Search for Order”—reflects the deepening instability gripping the Middle East and beyond.

A summit at a critical moment

In his opening address, Vice President Yilmaz warned that the post-World War II international order is fracturing under the weight of shifting power balances and overlapping crises in security, economy, climate, and migration. He identified the Israel-US-Iran conflict as a grave threat to regional and global stability, citing mounting humanitarian and economic fallout. Yilmaz reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to diplomacy, noting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s intensive efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire. He also condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria, calling for stronger international resistance to violations of international law.

Defending truth in the digital age

Yilmaz highlighted the growing danger of disinformation and AI-generated content, noting that modern conflicts are increasingly fought through information warfare. He emphasized Türkiye’s unique diplomatic position, capable of engaging with both Eastern and Western powers, and reaffirmed Ankara’s role as a mediator in conflicts from Ukraine to Africa. “The world is bigger than five,” he said, adding: “Humanity needs peace, and peace requires justice. We aim to be both just and strong.”

Communications Director Burhanettin Duran echoed these concerns, stating that strategic communication, conflict zones, and crises can no longer be considered separately. “Today, threats enter our world not with tanks but with new trends, and they come not with bullets but with manipulation,” Duran warned, stressing that protecting truth has become as critical as securing physical borders in the emerging security architecture.

Türkiye’s voice for stability

As the summit continues, Türkiye’s role as a convener of global dialogue underscores its growing influence in shaping the discourse on international stability. By bringing together diverse voices from government, media, academia, and civil society, Ankara is positioning itself as a bridge between competing narratives and a champion of principled communication in an era of unprecedented disruption.
