Taiwan has no 'ground, reason or right' to join UN: China urges against US interference

China on Thursday urged the US to stop interfering in its internal affairs, stating that Taiwan has no "ground, reason, or right" to join the UN or other bodies reserved for sovereign states.

"Taiwan does not have any ground, reason, or right to join the UN or any international organizations whose membership is confined to sovereign states," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning during a live-streamed news conference in Beijing.

"There is but one China in the world; Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory," said Mao, adding that the country's governance is the "sole legal governance representing the whole of China."

Beijing urges the US to "abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US Joint Communiques, observe international law and basic norms of international relations," said Mao, calling on Washington to "stop using the Taiwan question to interfere in China's internal affairs and stop sending wrong signals to Taiwan independence separatist forces."

Mao's remarks followed the US House of Representatives passing the Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act last month.

The act requires the US governor of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support Taiwan's admission and participation in the fund, as well as its ability to receive training, assistance, and employment opportunities.
