Turkish activists play key role in Global Sumud Flotilla’s Gaza aid mission

Turkish activists participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla’s Spring 2026 Mission have reaffirmed their determination to break Israel’s blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. The Turkish delegation, described as one of the initiative’s most significant components, has contributed to administration, coordination, and vessel preparations.
Turkish activists taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla’s Spring 2026 Mission have pledged to break the blockade on Gaza and deliver urgent humanitarian assistance. Fatih Varol, a board member of the flotilla, told Anadolu that the Turkish delegation is among the initiative’s most significant components. “Türkiye has deep-rooted historical ties with Palestine. As a people, we feel the tragedy unfolding in Gaza much more profoundly,” he said, noting strong public and civil society support in Türkiye.
Diplomatic and logistical efforts
Varol stated that over ten Turkish lawmakers from both governing and opposition parties attended the Global Sumud Parliamentarians Congress in Brussels on April 22, forming the mission’s diplomatic arm. They agreed to raise calls in their parliaments to end the genocide in Gaza, lift the blockade, ensure Israel’s compliance with international law, and activate international criminal justice mechanisms. The Turkish delegation also supported vessel preparations at Mediterranean ports financially.
‘Fake ceasefire’ not enough
Activist Gorkem Duru stressed that participants are preparing to sail toward Gaza, emphasizing that a “fake ceasefire” has not ended the occupation, blockade, or violence. “Last year, the flotilla set sail. This year, despite the ceasefire, the blockade and occupation continue, so we are setting out again, stronger and more numerous,” he said. The Spring 2026 Mission, which departed from Barcelona on April 12, includes approximately 70 vessels and nearly 1,000 participants from 70 countries — significantly larger than the 2025 mission.
