Turkish Airlines suspended flights to Venezuela

Turkish Airlines has temporarily suspended flights between Istanbul and Caracas following a US Federal Aviation Administration security advisory for Venezuelan airspace. The suspension affects flights from November 24-28, 2025, as multiple international carriers similarly halt Venezuela operations amid regional tensions.

Turkish Airlines has temporarily suspended its flights between Istanbul and Caracas in response to a security advisory issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding Venezuelan airspace. The suspension, affecting services from November 24 to 28, 2025, reflects growing concerns about aviation safety in the region amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

FAA Security Advisory and Airline Response

The FAA alert warned airlines of potentially hazardous conditions in Venezuelan airspace, citing the presence of advanced military aircraft, air defense systems, and anti-aircraft artillery capable of reaching civilian flight altitudes. While not imposing a complete ban, the advisory requires US carriers to notify the agency 72 hours before planned flights through the region. Turkish Airlines responded by canceling multiple flight numbers on the Istanbul-Caracas route during the specified dates.

Passenger Rebooking and Alternative Routes

Affected Turkish Airlines passengers are being rebooked on alternative routes through Bogota, Panama, Cancun, Mexico, or Havana. The airline emphasized that its Istanbul-Havana service continues to operate normally, with only the Caracas route temporarily suspended. Travel agents have been instructed to use specific waiver codes for mandatory changes during the rebooking process.

Broader International Aviation Impact

The security concerns have prompted multiple international carriers to similarly suspend Venezuela operations. Major airlines including LATAM, TAP, Iberia, Avianca, GOL, and Caribbean Airlines have announced temporary flight cancellations to Venezuela, significantly reducing international air connectivity to the South American nation.

Regional Tensions and Military Buildup

The aviation disruptions occur against a backdrop of heightened US-Venezuela tensions, with Washington deploying naval assets including the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier to the region. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has responded by mobilizing militia forces, while his defense minister has sharply criticized US policies, creating an environment of heightened regional instability affecting civilian aviation.
