Turkish ambassador calls for peaceful fulfillment of Syria pact
Türkiye's ambassador to Damascus, Nuh Yilmaz, has publicly urged for the non-violent execution of a key Syrian political agreement signed on March 10. During a visit to Aleppo, the ambassador emphasized that a peaceful resolution is essential to shift the region's focus toward reconstruction and development.
Advocating for dialogue over conflict
Ambassador Yilmaz stated that Türkiye is "eagerly awaiting the implementation of the March 10 agreement without the need for war." He argued that successful, peaceful implementation would render further fighting unnecessary, enabling all parties to concentrate on a shared "development agenda in peace." He placed blame for the stalled process on the YPG/SDF, which Ankara designates as a terrorist organization, accusing it of failing to meet its commitments and forcing the Syrian administration to seek alternative paths since January 1.
Celebrating stability in Aleppo
The ambassador's trip marked his first journey outside Damascus since his appointment, undertaken specifically to witness the restored calm in Aleppo. He congratulated Syrian officials, noting that the "issue of terrorism in certain neighborhoods has finally come to an end." Yilmaz highlighted the city's deep historical and commercial ties with neighboring Turkish provinces, stating that its stability is a source of "great happiness" for Türkiye. He also outlined Türkiye's ongoing humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people through agencies like AFAD and the Turkish Red Crescent.
Background of the agreement and recent clashes
The March 2025 agreement aimed at integrating the SDF into Syrian state institutions to preserve territorial unity. A follow-up accord in April specifically covered Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts, mandating the withdrawal of SDF forces east of the Euphrates. Syrian authorities assert the group has not complied. Recent shelling attributed to the group caused significant civilian casualties and displacement. For Türkiye, which shares a long border with Syria, the peaceful fulfillment of these agreements is critical for its national security and for fostering lasting stability that would facilitate the return of refugees and regional economic revival.
