Turkish defense minister vows to block terrorism, unilateral actions in region

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler stated that no terrorist group, including the PKK, YPG, or SDF, will be allowed to operate in the region, citing significant gains from counter-terrorism operations in 2025. He also warned against unilateral actions in Cyprus, the Aegean, and Eastern Mediterranean.
Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler has reiterated Türkiye's firm stance against terrorism and unilateral actions affecting its national interests. Speaking during a New Year's Eve visit to a military command in Polatli, Guler declared that terrorist groups like the PKK, its Syrian affiliates the YPG, and the SDF will not be permitted to maintain activities or impose new realities on the ground.
Progress Towards a 'Terror-Free Türkiye'
Minister Guler stated that operations in 2025 "significantly restricted the mobility" of terror organizations both domestically and across borders, undermining their access to shelter, logistics, and manpower. He asserted these achievements have established the foundation for pursuing the goal of a "Terror-Free Türkiye," crediting the nation's security forces, martyrs, and veterans for this hard-won success. Guler emphasized that counter-terrorism efforts would continue prudently and in coordination with Syrian authorities, calling on the SDF to fulfill its obligations under the March 10 integration agreement with Damascus.
Warning on Regional Unilateralism
Beyond counter-terrorism, the minister issued a strong warning against unilateral steps in the Eastern Mediterranean, Aegean Sea, and on the island of Cyprus. "Our resolve and capability to protect our rights remain firm. No step taken and no fait accompli carried out 'despite Türkiye' will ever be allowed," Guler stated. He positioned Türkiye as a staunch supporter of international law and a constructive actor for regional peace, highlighting the Turkish Armed Forces' contributions to security missions from Azerbaijan and Libya to Somalia as a stabilizing force.

Context of the Syrian Agreement
The reference to the March 10 agreement pertains to a deal announced by the Syrian presidency for the integration of the SDF into state institutions, reaffirming Syria's territorial unity. Both Damascus and Ankara have since accused the SDF, which is dominated by the YPG/PKK, of failing to implement the accord. Türkiye consistently emphasizes that security threats emanating from northern Syria directly impact its own national security.
