The Turkish Armed Forces have for the first time deployed soldiers aboard the newly commissioned ‘Karayel’ patrol boats during the EFES-2026 Combined, Joint, Live-Fire Exercise held in Izmir on May 12, 2026. The domestically-produced vessels represent a significant milestone in Türkiye’s push for national naval capabilities.

Advanced specifications
The Karayel class stands out with its high mobility, rapid deployment capability, sudden maneuverability, high wave resistance, and partial ballistic protection features. Officials stated that the patrol boats can reach speeds of 60 knots per hour at sea, making them highly effective for coastal surveillance, rapid response, and special operations.

Strategic significance
The deployment of Karayel patrol boats comes amid heightened naval activity in Türkiye’s surrounding seas, including the Aegean, Black Sea, and Eastern Mediterranean. As Türkiye continues to expand its domestic defence industry — from unmanned aerial vehicles to warships — the Karayel project underscores Ankara’s commitment to reducing foreign dependency and enhancing its naval deterrence posture. The boats are expected to be used for border security, counter-smuggling operations, and search-and-rescue missions.
